Is Cursing Actually Healthy for You
Are you guilty of the occasional curse word? Whether it’s when you get cut off in traffic, when you’re running late, or when something upsets you, most of us are guilty of using the occasional curse word. Not that this is a recommended practice, particularly if you have small children around that may hear and repeat the words, but it happens. We’re all human and we do our best to eliminate these words from our vocabulary. But wait—before you stop cursing, know that it could possibly be good for you! Sound too good to be true? Recent studies have shown that cursing can actually be good for your health. Know that this doesn’t give an open license to curse all the time, but there are instances where it can actually be good for you. So how can cursing actually benefit your health?
A Correlation to Pain Relief
Recent studies have shown that cursing may help to relieve pain that an individual may be feeling. Many of us have uttered a curse word when we injured ourselves, but we never knew it was actually good for us! The correlation is this—when you curse, it ties into the emotional part of the brain that manages how we feel pain. When we experience pain it releases certain emotions and actives the brain, and the cursing helps to subdue or manage the pain that we feel. It may sound farfetched but it’s true, but be careful about who happens to be around when you utter those choice curse words to help you with a little pain management.
It Helps to Give you a Release
You’re stressed out because you’re stuck in traffic and are running late for a meeting—you need a release and you need it fast. As you are feeling stress, uttering a curse word may help to calm you down a bit. This is a natural release when you are under stressful circumstances and that may be just what you need to get your mind and your body back on track. Uttering a curse word in a stressful situation may actually help you to release some of the pent up stress and tension. So if you’re feeling stressed out, consider uttering a curse word or two in the right circumstances.
Pushes Out the Negative Emotion
Oftentimes there is something negative that is happening which causes us to want to curse. When you feel that negative emotion correlated with the curse word, that causes our body to go into a “flight or fight” mode. If you push out the curse word and get that little bit of stress relief, it can allow you to cool down a bit. The negative emotion may increase the heart rate, and the curse word may be just what you need to get yourself back to a normal state, and get rid of the associated negative emotion. So consider a curse word here and there to get back to being your positive, happy, healthy self.
